No View, The Radio XXXII
Mariam Rezaei
Paradoxes

Mariam Rezaei is an English musician and composer most widely recognized for her experimental turntablism. Through her unique use of the turntables in creating and performing her equally unique compositions, Rezaei has become a prominent figure in the UK experimental performance/music scene, and has collaborated with an impressive list of musicians both live and on her recorded releases. In her hands the turntables become the most direct form of physical manipulation of recorded sound, turning a pre-recorded piece of music into an instrument itself, enhancing and enriching specific elements of the recording, or manipulated to the point they are no longer recognizable creating something completely new. She achieves this either by using the records of other artists (eclectically chosen for their musical character and often also social significance) or by having her own compositions/pieces pressed to vinyl. Her latest album ‘Skeen’ is an incredible example of her very abrasive sonic pallet combined with beautifully haunting remanences of her own voice.
Through her contribution to the series ‘No View, the Radio’ with her piece 'Paradoxes', she demonstrates both her skills on her instrument and her ear for aural narratives told through incredible sound textures.

In her own words about the piece:
‘Cultivation lies in destruction, concentration in distraction, soundness in brokenness, attainment in failure, and existence in non-existence. We must choose to use this for the good of every person. Breaking the words of Rumi (Masnavi IV, 2344) into pitches and drones. A composition of variables in flux, using determined uncertainties and in search of metamorphosis. When do the trees that bear fruit become legal food? Hope that sanctions on Iran will be broken and become a catalyst for positive change.
For Hassan.’

About the series: No View, The Radio
The arts are taking a break. Theaters, museums, concert halls and galleries are closed. To a large extent, the art that is so desperately needed right now is inaccessible. Imagine being quarantined at home without films, without books, without music. Though we may not access the art, we can still think about it. The enforced rupture of this isolation can also be an opportune moment to reflect on and from, the arts. Every Friday for the upcoming weeks we will showcase original musical works by different artists, selected by Alex Andropoulos.
