Marius Lut and Lotte Geeven at ARCOmadrid 2012

Professional visit + vernissage: 15 & 16 February from 12 to 9 p.m.
Open to the public: 17 — 19 February from 12 to 8 p.m.

In the context of Semana Naranja (Orange week), the Netherlands will be the guest country at the Arco Madrid 2012. In addition to various activities in the city centre, the fair will present a selection of Dutch galleries. The selection has been made by Xander Karskens, the curator of museum De Hallen, Haarlem. Twelve Amsterdam galleries, one Rotterdam gallery and one The Hague gallery have been chosen to represent the top ranking of contemporary Dutch art.
Gallery West is proud to have been invited as the only presentation institution of The Hague, and will show the work of two young artists: Marius Lut and Lotte Geeven, both former students of the Amsterdam Rijksacademie (2009).

The new works of Marius Lut (1976) are characterized by his use of the materials, the black and white proportions, and the extreme formats. Lut´s paintings are abstract, but never sternly geometric, and thus as direct as a logo. Lut constructs his shapes – which have an enormous impact on the observers and the surroundings – using thin layers of paint, tape, reflective PVC or epoxy resin. Hidden behind a concept with great visual impact that looks rather plain, we can find a system of minuscule imperfections that displays vulnerability and individuality – such as drops of dried resin or a pencil line. Referring to formalism, Lut provides with his work a new meaning to factors such as form, line, colour, texture, material and method, and makes sure that we can keep on observing endlessly.
Lut´s previous exhibitions include Museo del Emporda, Figueras, Spain; Galerie Donald Browne, Montreal; Hebel_121, Basel; Koninklijke Paleis, Amsterdam; Rijksacademie, Amsterdam; Aschenbach & Hofland Galleries, Amsterdam; 1646, The Hague; Billytown, Rijswijk, Art Basel Miami Beach 2010 and West, The Hague.

In her semi-abstract work, Lotte Geeven (1980) reveals fragments of a story. In objects, photographs and installations, she catches images that appeal to our senses. During her journeys, Geeven makes notes: memories she can use later on. Due to her sketchy interpretation, she offers the observer a lot of freedom, and by showing subtle ‘scenery’, she allows her audience to freely associate. For the artist, the development and growth of stories and images are of major importance. For ARCOmadrid, she has made a purpose-designed new installation, based on ‘The Silver Grid’ project for which she visited New York in the autumn of 2011. Over there, Geeven examined the city’s ‘interface’ by focusing on the various differences between people, nature and culture. Clear choices in shapes and colours and precision are characteristic of all her previous work, and they reoccur in these poetic observations.
Geeven´s previous exhibitions include Mart House Gallery, Amsterdam; PointB, New York; Lokaal 01, Breda; Parisian Laundry, Montreal; GEM, The Hague and various fairs such as NADA Miami beach, Art Amsterdam and Roma. In 2010, she was awarded the Illy Prijs (incentive prize for young talents) at Art Rotterdam.

To coincide with these presentations, two new publications will be issued. We will be pleased to send the publications at your request.

We look forward to welcoming you at stand 10D26 in the section Focus The Netherlands at ARCOmadrid 2012.

Lut heeft eerder geëxposeerd in o.a. Museo del Emporda, Figueras, Spanje; Galerie Donald Browne, Montreal; Hebel_121, Basel; Koninklijke Paleis, Amsterdam; Rijksacademie, Amsterdam; Aschenbach & Hofland Galleries, Amsterdam; 1646, Den Haag; Billytown, Rijswijk, Art Basel Miami Beach 2010 en West, Den Haag.
